The rental crisis is out of control.
Renters are being forced to compete for substandard homes no one can afford. Rents are rising faster than ever before. Too many renters are facing impossible choices, between paying rent and putting food on the table, or turning on the heater.
Everyone needs a home to live in, but right now, our housing system favours property investors, not renters.
The Greens have a plan to make rentals affordable and available:
The Government could immediately put a stop to unlimited rent increases by implementing a 2-year rent freeze, and capping rent increases thereafter.
There’s a whole lot more they could also do to tackle the rental crisis.
The Greens are pushing for them to:
- Freeze rent increases for 2 years
to let wages catch up with skyrocketing rent prices. - Put a 2% cap on rent increases, and limit them to once every 24 months
to finally put an end to unlimited rent increases. - Regulate AirBNB, and the rest of the short-stay industry
to open up more properties to secure, long-term rentals. - Enforce and strengthen the vacant property tax
to incentivise owners to put empty properties back on the rental market, or sell them.
- Enforce new and stronger standards for rental properties
including energy efficiency, to drive down power bills.
Almost one-third of Victorians are renters, and more than two-thirds of Australians support a rent freeze, according to polling.
We’re calling on the Labor Government to freeze rents and make renting fair.
With a huge number of signatures, we can show the Government that Victorian renters are demanding fair and affordable housing.
