Renters are being evicted so landlords can turn the homes into Airbnbs.
Entire buildings are being taken off the rental market and are being listed instead as short stay accomodation on sites like Airbnb.
These are buildings that were once affordable for young people, and now they’re $900 a week on airbnb.
This is happening far more often than the people would care to admit.
Landlords may treat housing as their investments.
But people are losing their homes.
Places they’ve lived for years.
Places that let them access work, study, their social networks.
People are being kicked out of their homes and are told that the owner or a relative is moving back in.
Only to find the house listed on Airbnb.
Renters are left scrambling to find somewhere else to live during a housing crisis.
Forced to spend hundreds if not thousands to move – in a cost of living crisis.
Renters feel there is no justice.
There’s not doing enough being done to protect their rights, or to enforce the protections that do exist.
Renters can’t rely on the investors to provide housing because they’ll just evict them in favour of Airbnb to make more money.
We need stronger action on rentals being made into Airbnb’s.
