The Government has given out around $3 million in grants to community groups, school and charities along the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) in exchange for their public support for the massive transport project.
The grant contracts state that the groups that receive them aren’t allowed to criticise the government or the SRL project and must invite government MPs to their events.
We know that these communities are facing huge disruptions, to their roads, parks being fenced off and more.
These contracts prohibit recipients from raising legitimate criticism of the SRL project or the government for fear of losing their funding.
The government have already tried to stifle public criticism on their North East Link project through NDAs.
These NDAs provided compensation payments to residents for damages caused by the construction of the road, only after they’d agreed to sign an NDA.
When will this government stop paying for people’s silence and instead start operating as a government should and allow and listen to community feedback?
